Photographs carry a distinctive trail: camera make and model, aperture, shutter speed, ISO, focal length and often GPS coordinates. Generated images almost never have any of it. That contrast is the most practical everyday signal for separating a real photo from a synthetic one.
It is a hint rather than a proof in both directions. Metadata can be fabricated, and it is routinely stripped by messaging apps and social platforms, so a perfectly genuine photo forwarded through WhatsApp will arrive with nothing attached. Can EXIF be faked?
Yes, with freely available tools. That is why camera metadata is treated as a supporting signal rather than a conclusive one, while a signed C2PA manifest is weighted much more heavily.
Does it detect edited photos?
Not reliably. This tool answers whether an image was generated, which is a different question from whether a genuine photo was retouched or composited.
